Why isn't my brand on DeepSeek?
Six structural reasons DeepSeek doesn't surface your brand — in order, from cheapest to fix to slowest. Run them top-down. The first failure on the list is almost always the answer for global brands new to the Mainland-CN AI surface.

1. The underlying search index doesn't have you
DeepSeek's retrieval layer behaves like ChatGPT search — it leans on a Bing-flavoured index for many real-time lookups. If your site isn't in Bing's index, DeepSeek can't fetch it during answer assembly, regardless of any other signal you optimise. This is the most common root cause for global brands that have invested in Google SEO but never registered with Bing Webmaster Tools.
Test: run site:your-brand.com on Bing. If you see fewer than 5 pages, this is the failure. Register at Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and use the URL inspection tool to force-index your priority pages. Allow 7–14 days for re-crawl. Confirm by re-running the site: query.
2. Your robots.txt is blocking the wrong crawlers
The single most common avoidable mistake. Many sites that have hardened against AI training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot) accidentally block AI retrieval crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) by using overbroad User-agent: * Disallow: / rules. This makes the site invisible to AI search even when it's open to humans and Googlebot.
DeepSeek does not publish a clearly named retrieval bot, but it composes answers using upstream search infrastructure that respects standard retrieval-bot policy. Sites blocking OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot tend to be invisible to DeepSeek too.
Test: fetch your-brand.com/robots.txt. Look for any Disallow: / line under User-agent: * or under search-bot user agents. Replace with the granular five-bucket policy described in AI crawler readiness: allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-User; choose to block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot if you want to keep content out of training; block Bytespider as a default until it declares cleanly.
3. Your site is a JavaScript-rendered SPA
Vercel's 2025 crawler study confirmed GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript. The same is true of the upstream retrieval infrastructure that DeepSeek answers use. If your site is a single-page application that renders content client-side — empty body, content injected by JavaScript after page load — AI crawlers see an empty page. Googlebot's headless-Chrome rendering has trained a generation of brand teams that JavaScript rendering is fine; for AI retrieval specifically, it is not.
Test: fetch your homepage with curl https://your-brand.com. If the response body is mostly empty or contains only a JavaScript bundle reference, AI crawlers see nothing of value. Fix by adding server-side rendering, static generation, or pre-rendering for crawlers (without UA-sniffing — that's cloaking and Google will penalise it).
4. You have no Mainland-CN-language presence
DeepSeek is a Mainland-Chinese consumer assistant. Mainland users prompt it in Chinese. Cross-language sampling — testing English prompts against Chinese engines, or measuring Chinese-engine surfacing using English-only content — has a documented suppression effect on brand surfacing. A brand that exists only in English on the public web is materially harder for DeepSeek to surface in zh-CN consumer prompts.
This does not mean you need to localise your full website to Chinese. It means a brand that lacks any Chinese-language footprint — no Chinese-language press coverage, no Baidu Baike entry, no Zhihu mentions, no Xiaohongshu posts, no zh-CN Wikipedia article — is structurally disadvantaged. Eastbound's role for US/UK brands is to build the Mainland-CN third-party citation graph rather than to localise the entire brand site; the substrate work is what matters.

5. You have no third-party citation graph
The single highest-leverage signal in published GEO research: brands cited by third parties are referenced roughly 6.5× more often than brands cited only on their own domain. In our 540-call DeepSeek source-influence panel (May 2026), Mainland-CN third-party platforms accounted for 72.3% of mentions; Wikipedia 21%; YouTube 20%; Reddit secondary but consistent. A brand that exists only on its own website lacks any of these surfaces.
In our separate 5-niche probe (125 calls), off-site encyclopedic presence (Wikipedia EN/ZH or Wikidata) was the strongest predictor of brand mention rate among the signals we tested for DeepSeek. On-site schema density was uncorrelated and mildly inverted in the sample. This is descriptive correlation, not causal lift, and the sample is small — but it consistently flags encyclopedic anchoring as the highest-priority off-site intervention test for DeepSeek-focused work.
Test: count your brand's appearances on Wikipedia (EN and ZH), Wikidata, Baidu Baike, Zhihu (recent posts), Xiaohongshu, SMZDM, vertical-industry pubs. If the total across all surfaces is under ten substantive mentions, this is your structural failure. The fix is multi-quarter.
6. You haven't actually measured
The final diagnostic is meta-diagnostic. Many brand teams conclude "we're not on DeepSeek" from one or two casual prompts, often in English, often with a generic question. This is unreliable. DeepSeek's surfacing pattern varies sharply by prompt language, prompt specificity, prompt category, model snapshot, and time of day. A single English prompt asking "what's the best X" tells you almost nothing about whether your brand will surface for a Mainland-CN consumer asking the same question in Chinese with category-specific vocabulary.
Test: run a stratified zh-CN prompt panel — at least 20 prompts spanning awareness-stage and decision-stage intent, varied price tiers, varied sub-categories. What is usually not the cause
- Missing JSON-LD schema. SearchVIU's 2025 5-system × 8-scenario × 10-query test found 0 of 5 systems extracted JSON-LD-only data; Williams-Cook's DUCKYEA fake-schema test (Feb 2026) confirmed ChatGPT and Perplexity tokenise schema as plain text. Bing/Copilot is the confirmed exception. Adding JSON-LD will not move DeepSeek's surfacing weight.
- Missing FAQ section. SE Ranking's 2025 129K-domain analysis found FAQ-schema pages averaged 3.6 ChatGPT citations vs 4.2 without. Adding FAQ blocks will not help.
- Page speed. Page speed matters for SEO; AI retrieval crawlers don't penalise slow pages the way Googlebot does.
- Domain authority. ~83% of Google AI Overview citations come from outside Google's top 10; the AI surface samples wider than the human surface and weights evidence density over rank. High DA doesn't guarantee AI citation, and lower DA doesn't preclude it.
