What is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek is a Hangzhou-based Chinese AI lab whose chat product (chat.deepseek.com) and open-weight models — V3 and R1 — became a default consumer AI assistant for Chinese users in early 2025. The chat product is what consumers use to ask product-recommendation, comparison and how-to questions; the API and open-weight models are what developers use. For brand-visibility purposes, the consumer chat surface is what matters.
DeepSeek's distinguishing feature in the Chinese AI landscape is that it is the most Western-balanced of the three major Mainland engines (the others being Qwen and Doubao). Among the three engines we measure, DeepSeek surfaces Western-published evidence — Wikipedia, YouTube, Reddit, English-language vertical media — at meaningfully higher rates than Qwen or Doubao. For global brands without yet-mature Mainland source-graph presence, DeepSeek is often the first Chinese engine to surface them.
The company's models are open-weight (released under permissive licences), which has driven adoption in developer communities and in third-party hosting (DeepSeek runs on lots of self-hosted infrastructure). But the surface we measure for GEO purposes is the official consumer chat product, where the recommendation behaviour matters for brand visibility. DeepSeek SEO, DeepSeek optimization, DeepSeek visibility — same discipline
Three phrases get used for the same body of work. DeepSeek SEO is the marketing-team-friendly label, inherited from the SEO heritage. DeepSeek optimization is the academic-leaning phrase used in the GEO literature (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). DeepSeek visibility describes the outcome — your brand surfacing inside DeepSeek answers when consumers ask product, comparison, or how-to questions. They are not three different programmes. They are three labels for the same work, which means measurement infrastructure, on-site content design, and off-site source-graph investment.

How DeepSeek decides what to recommend
Across our 540-call source-influence panel (May 2026), DeepSeek's source mention pattern was:

In a separate single-engine probe across 5 Mainland-CN niches (gourmand perfume, mineral sunscreen, mechanical-keyboard switches, natural wine, hand-built ceramic dinnerware) we ran in April 2026 with 125 calls (25 prompts × 5 reps), off-site encyclopedic presence (Wikipedia EN/ZH or Wikidata) was the strongest predictor of brand mention rate among the signals we tested. On-site schema density was uncorrelated and mildly inverted in the sample — controls (lower-mention brands) averaged more schema types than winners.
This is descriptive correlation, not causal lift. The sample is small (n=125 calls, single LLM, 5 niches). It does not generalise to Qwen, Doubao, ChatGPT or Perplexity. But it is consistent enough to flag as a working hypothesis: for DeepSeek specifically, encyclopedia presence pulls more weight than schema markup. We treat this as the highest-priority intervention test for DeepSeek-focused work.
DeepSeek behaves more like ChatGPT than like Perplexity on citation count: few sources, deep — rather than wide. A single citation has materially more impact on the answer than the same citation in a wider Perplexity-style retrieval. This makes DeepSeek strategy "pick your top page per category and write it deep, definitive, and quotable", not "publish many shallow pages".
How to improve your DeepSeek visibility
1-hour layer — technical hygiene
Granular robots.txt across the five bot buckets (training, retrieval, user-triggered, opt-out tokens, undeclared) — for DeepSeek specifically, allow the search/retrieval crawlers and user-triggered bots while you can choose to block training bots. Ship llms.txt at root; ship llms-full.txt for any site with non-trivial depth. Submit sitemap to Google Search Console (DeepSeek's retrieval layer leans on Bing-style indices but a clean Google sitemap is still a baseline signal). Add IndexNow.
Multi-week layer — content design
Length sweet spot 1,000–3,000 words. Specificity (real numbers, dated comparisons, named entities) beats fluff. Encyclopedia / explainer pages outperform news pages — DeepSeek's "few sources, deep" pattern rewards definitive reference content over news cycles. Pure FAQ-format pages underperform; do not pad with redundant FAQ sections.
Multi-quarter layer — encyclopedia + community publishing
Given the 5-niche probe finding, the highest-leverage off-site work for DeepSeek-focused brands is Wikipedia / Wikidata presence: a properly-cited Wikipedia article is the single strongest correlate of mention rate we have measured for DeepSeek. Mainland community presence (Zhihu in particular — surfaced in 97% of responses in our handbag panel) compounds. Reddit has measurable but secondary surfacing weight; YouTube secondary as well, particularly for product demonstration categories.
How DeepSeek differs from Qwen and Doubao at the source level
The three Chinese engines do not share the same evidence base. Top-15 source overlap (Jaccard) across our 540-call panel was 0.20–0.30 between any two of the three. DeepSeek is the most Western-balanced (72.3% Mainland-CN sources); Qwen leans most institutional (85.0% Mainland with a heavier weight on regulatory bodies, professional associations and academic surfaces); Doubao is most CN-substrate-biased (88.6% Mainland, with strongest weight on commerce / lifestyle aggregators — SMZDM, Xiaohongshu — that surface less on the other two).
The practical consequence: a brand winning on DeepSeek may be invisible on Doubao for the same prompt, and vice versa. Source-graph work that targets only DeepSeek's preferred surfaces (Wikipedia, Zhihu, vertical media) will under-perform on Doubao prompts where SMZDM and Xiaohongshu carry more weight. When DeepSeek is the wrong engine to optimise for first
DeepSeek-first is the correct sequence for most US and UK brands new to the Mainland-CN AI surface — its Western-balanced source mix is the most accessible entry point, and its existing Wikipedia / YouTube / Reddit presence transfers measurable surfacing weight. There are exceptions:
- Lifestyle, beauty, FMCG brands targeting young Mainland-CN consumers are typically better served by Doubao-first work, where Xiaohongshu and Douyin transcripts carry disproportionate weight.
- Enterprise, B2B, regulated-industry brands typically gain more from Qwen-first work, where institutional sources (regulatory bodies, industry associations, white papers) dominate.

What to avoid on DeepSeek-focused work
- Do not call DeepSeek "Western-friendly" or "less Chinese." It is still 72.3% Mainland-CN sources in our panel. The correct framing is "the most Western-balanced of the three Chinese engines we tested" — which is materially different from "Western".
- Do not promise "rank in DeepSeek in 7 days." The fastest-moving layer (technical hygiene) takes days–weeks to register; the highest-leverage layer (encyclopedia / source-graph) compounds over quarters.
- Do not over-invest in JSON-LD schema as a DeepSeek strategy. JSON-LD is a Bing/Copilot-side index-enrichment signal; we have not observed it driving DeepSeek citations in our experimental work.
- Do not assume DeepSeek measurement transfers to Qwen or Doubao. Cross-engine source overlap (Jaccard top-15) is 0.20–0.30. Findings on DeepSeek do not transfer.
