What is generative engine optimization for China?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the discipline of making your brand cited, quoted and recommended inside the answers AI assistants return — rather than ranked in a list of blue links. Generic GEO targets ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Perplexity and Gemini. GEO for China targets the AI engines a Mainland-Chinese consumer actually uses: DeepSeek, Qwen (Alibaba's Tongyi) and Doubao (ByteDance's consumer assistant), plus secondary engines like Yuanbao, Kimi and Baidu's ERNIE Bot. The two are not interchangeable. The source ecosystem each engine reads from differs by 70–80% between Western and Chinese engines, which means a GEO framework built for ChatGPT cannot be ported to DeepSeek or Doubao without rebuilding the source-substrate model from scratch. We measured this directly in May 2026 across a 540-call panel: top-15 source overlap (Jaccard) between the three Chinese engines was 0.20–0.30 — and overlap with Western engines is even lower.
Why GEO China is different from generic GEO
Three structural differences matter for any US or UK brand approaching this work:
Different source substrate
DeepSeek surfaced 72.3% Mainland-CN sources (Zhihu, Baike, Xiaohongshu, SMZDM, Bilibili, vertical media) in our 540-call panel; Qwen 85.0%; Doubao 88.6%. The Western fractions are different in kind: DeepSeek's Western surface is community-led (Wikipedia 21%, YouTube 20%, Reddit secondary), Qwen's is institutional (regulatory bodies, professional associations, academic), Doubao's is minimal. Generic GEO content does not absorb cleanly into any of these.
Different language and prompt style
Mainland-CN consumer prompts are stylistically different from English-language prompts. Cross-language sampling — testing English prompts against Chinese engines, or vice versa — has a documented suppression effect on brand surfacing. GEO China requires Mainland Chinese prompt panels run against the Mainland Chinese model deployments. Different infrastructure
Robots.txt rules, llms.txt conventions, IndexNow webhooks, sitemap submissions — the technical hygiene layer is shared with generic GEO. But the China-specific layer adds Bytespider rule decisions, Baidu Spider classification, Sogou and 360Spider handling, and the question of whether your site geo-blocks Mainland-CN traffic at the CDN edge (a common silent killer of Mainland AI surfacing).
The mechanism: selection, absorption, mention
The clearest published model of generative search is Zhang Kai & Yao Jingang's 2026 measurement framework (arXiv:2604.25707v1), which separates the process into two stages, not one. Citation selection decides whether a page enters the engine's source pool. Citation absorption decides whether the page actually shapes the answer the user reads — providing language, structure or specific facts — versus sitting as background. A page can be selected often but absorbed weakly.
Tw93's 2026 instrumentation of ChatGPT made this concrete: the engine retrieves roughly 100 pages per query, but only ~15% appear in the answer. The other 85% are selected but not absorbed — present in the candidate pool, invisible in the output. Most retrieved chunks fail the evidence or quotability test, not the relevance test.
For GEO China specifically, the same mechanism applies but the candidate pool is different. DeepSeek behaves like ChatGPT — few sources, deep — where a single citation has high impact. Doubao retrieves wider but absorbs less from each. Qwen sits between them and weights institutional sources. Optimisation work targets all three stages: get into the index (selection precondition), get into the candidate pool (selection), and write content quotable enough that the engine extracts it into the answer (absorption). How GEO China relates to traditional SEO
Traditional SEO and GEO China share infrastructure but diverge at the content and authority layers. Crawlability, index coverage, semantic URLs, internal linking — all carry over. Keyword density, FAQ schema and JSON-LD as universal AI signals do not. SE Ranking's 2025 analysis of 129,000 domains found FAQ-schema pages averaged 3.6 ChatGPT citations versus 4.2 without; SearchVIU's 2025 5-system × 8-scenario × 10-query test found 0 of 5 systems extracted price data placed exclusively in JSON-LD. The signals that worked in the rich-snippet era of 2019–2022 are not the signals that drive AI citation in 2026.
The most important divergence in the China context: traditional China SEO targets Baidu, Sogou and 360 Search ranking. None of these have the same upstream relationship to DeepSeek, Qwen or Doubao that Bing has to ChatGPT. Investing in Baidu ranking does not, on its own, move DeepSeek surfacing weight. The three engines that matter
A GEO China engagement starts by understanding how each of the three primary engines reads your brand differently, because the optimisation work for each looks different:

- Multi-quarter layer (third-party source-graph publishing). The compounding moat: Baike, Zhihu, Xiaohongshu, SMZDM, Bilibili, Mainland vertical media. Brands cited by 3rd parties are referenced ~6.5× more often than brands cited only on their own domain (published GEO research).
We label every recommendation as one of three states: measured evidence (we observed it in a panel; n and panel structure stated), prior-knowledge hypothesis (consistent with published research; we have not measured it directly), or planned intervention test (we expect it to help; before/after measurement required to confirm). We do not collapse the three.
