# Generative Engine Optimization for China (GEO China)

> What GEO means when the answer engines are DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao — and how US, UK and other Western brands operate on this surface.

## What is GEO China?

GEO is the discipline of making your brand cited and recommended inside AI assistant answers, not ranked in blue links. **GEO for China** targets DeepSeek, Qwen (Alibaba's Tongyi), Doubao (ByteDance) — plus secondary engines Yuanbao, Kimi, Baidu's ERNIE Bot.

Generic GEO frameworks (built for ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Perplexity, Gemini) do not port to Chinese engines. Top-15 source overlap (Jaccard) between the three Chinese engines was 0.20–0.30 in our 540-call panel; overlap with Western engines is even lower.

## Why GEO China is different

- **Different source substrate.** DeepSeek 72.3% Mainland-CN sources, Qwen 85.0%, Doubao 88.6%. Western fractions also differ in kind: DeepSeek's Western surface is community-led (Wikipedia 21%, YouTube 20%); Qwen's is institutional (regulatory + academic); Doubao's is minimal.
- **Different language and prompt style.** Cross-language sampling suppresses brand surfacing. Mainland-CN prompts must be run against Mainland-CN model deployments (DeepSeek deepseek-chat; Qwen on DashScope international; Doubao on BytePlus ModelArk international).
- **Different infrastructure.** Bytespider, BaiduSpider, Sogou, 360Spider rule decisions; geo-blocking checks at CDN edge.

## The three engines that matter

- **DeepSeek** — most Western-balanced. See https://www.eastbound.ai/deepseek-seo/ + https://www.eastbound.ai/deepseek-rank-tracker/
- **Qwen** — most institutional/professional. See https://www.eastbound.ai/qwen-optimization/
- **Doubao** — most CN-substrate-biased + commerce/lifestyle-aggregator-leaning. See https://www.eastbound.ai/doubao-optimization/

## Eastbound's GEO China approach (3 layers, by leverage)

1. **1-hour layer (technical hygiene).** Granular robots.txt (5 buckets), llms.txt + llms-full.txt, sitemap submission, IndexNow, Markdown alternates.
2. **Multi-week layer (content design).** 1,000–3,000-word sweet spot, encyclopedia structure (~3× citation lift over news per published research), specificity over fluff, anti-FAQ discipline.
3. **Multi-quarter layer (third-party source-graph publishing).** The compounding moat: Baike, Zhihu, Xiaohongshu, SMZDM, Bilibili, vertical media. 3rd-party citations referenced ~6.5× more than self-citations.

Every recommendation labelled: measured evidence / prior-knowledge hypothesis / planned intervention test.

## What we will NOT promise

- No "rank in DeepSeek in 7 days".
- No "guaranteed visibility lift".
- No claim that JSON-LD makes Chinese AI find you (Bing/Copilot signal in our sample, not observed driving DeepSeek / Qwen / Doubao citations).
