# China AI visibility for global brands

> What China AI visibility means in 2026 — what the three Chinese answer engines look at when they decide whether to surface your brand, what we have measured, and what we are still treating as hypothesis.

## What is China AI visibility?

China AI visibility is the category covering how Mainland-Chinese AI assistants — primarily DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao — surface, cite and recommend brands when answering Mainland-CN consumer questions. Distinct from generic LLM visibility (ChatGPT/Google AI Overview), distinct from Baidu SEO (rank-in-search-results, not generative-answer participation), distinct from Western GEO (English-corpus, English-source-graph).

Two measurement stages: **citation selection** (does your domain enter the engine's source pool?) and **citation absorption** (does the page shape the answer language vs sit unused?). User-visible mention is a third stage downstream of both.

## Why China AI visibility is distinct from generic AI visibility

Across a 540-call panel (30 prompts × 3 LLMs × 3 reps × 2 turns) we ran in May 2026:

| Engine | Mainland-CN source share | Top non-CN sources |
|-----------|--------------------------|--------------------|
| DeepSeek | 72.3% | Wikipedia 21%, YouTube 20%, Reddit secondary |
| Qwen | 85.0% | Institutional / professional bodies overrepresented |
| Doubao | 88.6% | Commerce / lifestyle aggregators (SMZDM, Xiaohongshu) overrepresented |

Top-15 source overlap (Jaccard) between the three: 0.20–0.30. Descriptive observation, not causal — not a claim about training corpora, only about engine self-attribution.

Replication: re-run of the identical panel one week later → Pearson r 0.97–0.99 across all three, ICC 0.97–0.99, top-5 κ = 1.00. Doubao top-15 κ = 0.46 (long-tail less stable for Doubao specifically).

## The three engines that matter

### DeepSeek

The most Western-balanced of the three: 72.3% Mainland-CN sources, 21% Wikipedia, 20% YouTube. Off-site encyclopedic presence (Wikipedia / Wikidata) was the strongest predictor of brand mention rate in our 5-niche probe; on-site schema density was uncorrelated and mildly inverted in the sample. Single-citation impact is high.

### Qwen

The most institutional / professional: 85% Mainland-CN sources, with overrepresentation of regulatory-ladder content. Brands in regulated categories — pharma, medical device, financial services, education — surface differently here. Runs on DashScope international (`dashscope-intl.aliyuncs.com`), NOT BytePlus.

### Doubao

The most CN-substrate-biased: 88.6% Mainland-CN sources, strong commerce/lifestyle aggregator lean. On a 1,620-response handbag panel: SMZDM 72%, Xiaohongshu 64%. Runs on BytePlus ModelArk international (`ark.ap-southeast.bytepluses.com`), NOT DashScope. Long-tail source ranking less stable (κ_top-15 = 0.46).

## The Mainland source graph

Brands cited by 3rd parties are referenced ~6.5× more often than brands cited only on their own domain (published GEO research). Priority list:

- **百度百科 (Baidu Baike)** — encyclopedia entry; survives across LLM training cycles.
- **知乎 (Zhihu)** — long-form Q&A; high absorption in DeepSeek and Doubao (97% in handbag panel).
- **小红书 (Xiaohongshu / RED)** — strong for B2C lifestyle, beauty, FMCG.
- **什么值得买 (SMZDM)** — deal aggregator; high weight on Doubao for commerce queries (72% handbag panel) — but weight COLLAPSES at ultra-luxury price tier (replacement: The Purse Forum, Vogue Business, WWD, Sotheby's/Christie's archives, Baghunter).
- **36氪 / 虎嗅 / 钛媒体** — tech/business vertical media.
- **微信公众号** — well-indexed by Tencent Yuanbao.
- **Bilibili / Douyin** — video transcripts; growing in DeepSeek/Doubao.

Source-graph strategy must be category- and tier-specific.

## How measurement works

Two stages mirroring Zhang Kai & Yao Jingang's 2026 GEO measurement framework:

1. **Stratified zh-CN prompt panel** — Mainland-CN consumer-voice prompts run against live API endpoints (DeepSeek; Qwen on DashScope international; Doubao on BytePlus ModelArk international), at L1 (broad-category) and L2 (positioning-niche) levels.
2. **Source attribution and absorption analysis** — selection (which sources surface) and absorption (which shape answer language).

Reliability discipline: report top-5 κ alongside top-15 κ, Pearson r and ICC. Doubao top-15 κ = 0.46 (we disclose).

Every recommendation labelled: measured evidence / prior-knowledge hypothesis / planned intervention test.

## What changes a brand can make

Three layers, by effort:

1. **1-hour layer — technical hygiene.** Granular robots.txt (5 buckets), llms.txt, sitemap submission, IndexNow, Markdown alternates on top-10 pages.
2. **Multi-week layer — content design.** Length 1,000–3,000 words; specificity over fluff; encyclopedia/explainer pages outperform news pages by ~3× per citation; FAQ-format underperforms.
3. **Multi-quarter layer — third-party source-graph publishing.** Baike, Zhihu, Xiaohongshu, SMZDM, Bilibili, vertical media. The compounding moat. 6.5× third-party-vs-self amplification.

Layers 1+2 testable on your own site; layer 3 is where moats live.
